Babel workshops is part of the Month of a Hundred Languages which is an annual festival that celebrates mother tongues, multilingualism and language diversity. During the festival the importance of mother tongues and languages is examined through the arts, meetings and workshops.

Babel workshop project began in 2009, at Helsinki Art Museum, with regular weekend Babel-workshops and school workshops on request. The concept was developed by Outi Korhonen who worked between 2009 and 2010 as the project coordinator. Kaisa Kettunen made the museum work possible.  The project received the Pedaali Annual Award in Museum Pedagogy in 2011.

In 2013, the project expanded to five Helsinki metropolitan area museums, funded by Kone Foundation. Since then the coordinator has been Birgitta Orava.

Kone Foundation supports the project.
